Busting the Bankers’ Club: Finance for the Rest of Us, a new book by Gerald Epstein and published by UC Press, describes the multiple ways in which our modern financial system – dominated by megabanks and powerful shadow financial institutions – pushes income and wealth to the top, while demanding tax-payer bailouts from the rest of us. The book’s core is a description of the battle between the Bankers’ Club, how powerful bank allies including the Federal Reserve, lawyers, financial regulators and economists support and protect the banks, on the one hand, and the Club Busters, political activists, progressive politicians, principled economists and lawyers, try to create laws, regulations and institutions that will reform finance to serve the people, rather than the other way around.
Please join Gerald Epstein and Robert Pollin, Co-Directors of PERI; Dean Baker, Senior Economist and Co-Founder of the Center for Economic and Policy Research; Lisa Donner, Executive Director of Americans Financial Reform, Christine Desan, public banking activist and Professor of Law at Harvard University, and Jennifer Taub, Professor of Law at Western New England College and expert on white collar crime, who will discuss necessary reforms of our financial system, positive steps that can be and are being done to bring these reforms to fruition and how to overcome the attempts by the Bankers’ Club to block these efforts.
