Special Issue in the Journal of Critical Historical Studies : Early Modern Monetary Relations
The usual narrative emphasizes the expansion of European monetary institutions globally through violence and coercion. While accurate and important, this story overlooks the local and regional monetary systems that were displaced. This special issue explores how global capitalism did not emerge solely from the imposition of a European monetary regime, but also through its interactions with preexisting systems at the peripheries.
